When should a woman seek medical attention for a prolonged period?

According to Nicole Hammond, CRNP, of The Gynecologic Oncology Center at Mercy, there are some very common, benign things that can cause a prolonged period.

"Hormone changes is one of the most common and benign reasons that periods could be prolonged, things like uterine fibroids or polyps which are benign growths. Endometriosis could cause prolonged periods, or it could be nothing," Hammond said.

Hammond added that a period longer than eight days for two consecutive months should be checked out.
