Commitment to Improving Quality of Life
Our doctors at The Maryland Spine Center are dedicated to providing unique and innovative treatments enabling their patients to experience an improved quality of life. When appropriate, our spine specialists utilize non-operative treatments as a first line treatment.
For severe spine deformities, cases of neurologic dysfunction or when non-operative treatments have proven ineffective, surgery is pursued. Our spine surgeons’ guiding philosophy is to perform the smallest surgery that will reliably correct the spine disorder with a minimum risk of medical complications or future problems.
Advanced Surgical Techniques for Spinal Disorders
When surgery is needed, our spine surgeons use state-of-the-art technology combined with minimally invasive approaches to provide optimal symptom relief with a typically accelerated recovery. Our standard surgical procedures include:
- Microscopic discectomy, the surgical removal of herniated disc material
- Lumbar decompressions
- Minimally invasive lumbar fusion
- Anterior cervical fusion
- Scoliosis correction
Following surgery, our spine surgeons recommend physical therapy and rehabilitation resources to help our patients achieve a faster recovery.
Dedication to Research and Development in Spinal Surgery
Dr. Charles Edwards dedicated his career to extensive research and development to more accurately diagnose spine disorders and improve the results of major spine surgery. He focused on spinal biomechanics and the development of instrumentation and operations that permitted greater correction of major spine deformities with less invasive surgery than previously possible. Dr. Edwards’ research has set the standard in today’s treatment of spine disorders.
Dr. Charles Edwards, II, Director of the Spine Clinic at Mercy, has followed in his father’s footsteps by making research an important aspect of The Maryland Spine Center. Under Dr. Edwards’ leadership, The Maryland Spine Center was chosen as one of only six centers nationally to participate in the first ever National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored clinical trial for adult scoliosis.
