Pelvic Ultrasound at Mercy

The Institute for Gynecologic Care at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, provides patients comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic conditions and disorders. Our gynecologists offer ultrasound as a diagnostic procedure.

What is a Pelvic Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses sound waves to make computer images of internal body organs. A pelvic ultrasound is used to look for growths and abnormalities of the uterus and related organs.

How is a Pelvic Ultrasound performed?

A pelvic ultrasound is typically completed with a handheld device known as a transducer. During a transabdominal ultrasound, a transducer is used to pass back and forth over the lower belly to create images for examination. During a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is shaped to fit the vagina.

Who should receive a Pelvic Ultrasound?

A doctor may perform an ultrasound if you are experiencing chronic pelvic pain as the result of abnormalities or growths such as uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts. Some ultrasounds may be used to diagnose causes of infertility. Mercy’s physicians will help determine if a diagnostic ultrasound is a suitable diagnostic tool for your condition.

The Institute for Gynecologic Care at Mercy offers physician and surgical expertise in benign or non-cancerous conditions of the female genital tract as well as in malignant or cancerous conditions such as uterine, ovarian and cervical cancer.
