The doctors of The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy offer transforaminal injections for patients with leg and back pain.

What is a Transforaminal Injection?

A transforaminal injection, sometimes a called selective nerve block, is a medicated injection used to alleviate leg and back pain.

How is a Transforaminal Injection performed?

The injection is performed with the patient lying on their stomach. Using a fluoroscope, a small gauge needle is inserted into the epidural space through the bony opening of the exiting nerve root. The foramina are small openings between the vertebrae through which the nerve roots exit the spinal canal and enter the body.

This technique allows the medication to be placed closer to the irritated nerve root than in conventional epidural steroid injections.

Who should receive a Transforaminal Injection?

Patients with back pain due to a herniated disc or spinal stenosis may be candidates for transforaminal injections. Our expert pain management doctors at The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy will evaluate your condition to determine if transforaminal injections are appropriate for your needs.
