Employee Benefits at Mercy

Mercy Baltimore

In the tradition of caring displayed by the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center offers a comprehensive benefits package to both full-time and part-time employees. Many of Mercy’s benefits are provided on a pre-tax basis, which will help reduce income taxes and increase your take home pay. Most of Mercy’s insurance plans become effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.

Medical, Prescription Drug & Vision Insurance

Mercy Medical Center currently offers two triple option medical plans: a Premier Plan and a Standard Plan.  Both plans include prescription drug coverage and vision coverage. Prescription and vision coverage are bundled with the health insurance and therefore cannot be elected independently from the medical insurance. In addition Mercy offers a $0 copay prescription program for brand name prescriptions through CRX International, which is voluntary.

Mercy Dollars Program

Mercy offers a per pay reduction off of the cost of the medical insurance for those benefits-eligible employees earning less than a particular hourly rate.

Dental Insurance

Mercy offers a PPO dental plan. This plan covers diagnostic and preventive services (oral exam, x-rays), general services (fillings, root canals), major services (bridges, crowns) and orthodontics (up to age 19).

Life Insurance Coverage

Basic Life Insurance

Mercy provides term life insurance with accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) coverage of two times your annual salary up to $50,000 of coverage at no cost to the employee.

Dependent Life Insurance

Mercy provides dependent life insurance for your spouse, if applicable, of $2,000. Dependent children from birth to six months are covered for $100 and children 6 months to 19 years (or age 25 if a full-time student) are covered for $1,000. There is no cost to the employee.

Employee Optional Group Term Life Insurance

Employees may purchase optional life insurance for themselves in $10,000 increments subject to a maximum of $450,000, whichever is less. The guaranteed issue amount is $200,000.  If electing more than $200,000, you will need to complete an Evidence of Insurability (EOI) form.

Spouse Optional Group Term Life Insurance

If you have elected employee optional life insurance, you may also purchase additional life insurance coverage for your spouse. This insurance is available in increments of $5,000 subject to a maximum of $225,000 or 50% of the amount of optional life insurance you elect.

Dependent Optional Group Term Life Insurance

If you have elected employee optional life insurance, you may also purchase additional life insurance covering your dependent children. Dependent children from 14 days to 6 months may be covered for $250. For dependent children from 6 months to age 19 (or up to age 25 if a full-time student), you may purchase insurance in increments of $2,500 to a maximum of $10,000.

Disability Coverage

Short Term Disability

Mercy provides employer paid short term disability benefits to benefits-eligible employees (32 hours per pay period or greater) in the event that you become temporarily disabled. There is a new hire waiting period of 6 months. The benefit will then begin after a 7 day elimination period. The plan will replace 66 2/3% of salary and all deductions will continue from your pay (medical, dental, 401(k), voluntary benefits, United Way, etc...).

Long Term Disability

Mercy provides employer paid long term disability benefits to full-time employees (64 hours per pay period or greater). The benefit begins on the 181st day of continuous disability. The plan pays 60% of salary (to a maximum $9,000 per month) minus any reductions as specified in the Certificate of Coverage.

Retirement Plans

403(b) Retirement Plan

Contributions may begin on the first of the month following 30 days of service. Employees may be eligible for the employer match the first full quarter after one year of service. In order to be eligible for the employer match, employees must be benefits-eligible, a .4 FTE or greater and must have worked a minimum of 250 hours in the quarter.

403(b) Catch-Up

If you have reached age 50 or will reach age 50 during the calendar year January 1 through December 31 and are making the maximum pre-tax contribution under IRS rules, you may make an additional catch-up contribution.

457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan

This non-qualified retirement plan is intended for employees who would like to make additional pre-tax deferrals and who are on target to contribute the IRS maximum to the 403(b). In addition, employees must be benefits-eligible and a .4 FTE (32 hours per pay period) or greater. Contributions may begin the first of the month following thirty days of service. No employer match is made to this plan.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Mercy offers both Health Care and Dependent Care Accounts. These plans provide a method to pay for certain eligible health care expenses and for qualified dependent child care expenses on a pre-tax basis.  Funds may be directed into either or both accounts by authorizing money to be deducted from your paycheck.

Employee Assistance Program (WellWorks)

This benefit provides a comprehensive and confidential wellness, short-term counseling and referral program for all employees and their household members, regardless of their employment status. The plan also provides financial and legal services.

Tuition Reimbursement

This program is available to most regular status employees who are regularly scheduled and budgeted in at least a .4 FTE position or above. Grant funded employees are not eligible to participate in this program. Employees who choose to take advantage of this program must be enrolled in a continuous course of study and the course of study must have a direct relationship to one's job or to a hospital related occupation. Employees may choose where they enroll and how many credits they take each semester.

Tuition Reimbursement will be based on the employee's budgeted hours. Reimbursement is made based on the cost of the actual tuition expense and does not apply to fees, books, etc.

Reimbursement will take place based upon the successful completion of the approved course of study and the employee's submission on the tuition application, tuition receipt and grade report. Your application must be approved before you start classes to be eligible for reimbursement.
