An ultrasound guided biopsy uses sound waves, or ultrasound, to produce images. Ultrasound guided biopsies are typically used during fine-needle aspirations, when thyroid lumps are not able to be detected by sight or touch. Ultrasound guided biopsies guide the placement of the needle that will be used to extract tissue samples from the thyroid.
Using a sonar device outside of the body, an ultrasound guided biopsy produces images doctors utilize during a fine needle aspiration. The ultrasound guided biopsy will find the exact location of the thyroid lump to be examined.
