The Urology Center at Mercy - Baltimore, MD

The Urology Specialists of Maryland at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, treats a broad spectrum of prostate disorders. Our physician team uses prostate screening as a tool to detect prostate cancer in men.

What is a Prostate Screening?

Prostate screenings are tests used to help detect prostate cancer in its early stages. Prostate cancer often is not accompanied by symptoms, which can make prostate screening tests important tools in finding and treating prostate cancer at the earliest stage. Prostate screening tests are typically offered to men over the age of 50.

Types of Prostate Screenings
  • Digital Rectal Exam - A digital rectal exam is conducted by a nurse or doctor. They insert a lubricated gloved finger into the rectum and feel the prostate for lumps or any abnormalities.
  • PSA Test - A PSA test (prostate-specific antigen) measures the level of PSA in the blood. The PSA levels are higher in men who have prostate cancer, have a prostate infection or have a noncancerous enlarged prostate.
  • Prostate Cancer Gene Test - If the PSA is high, but a biopsy (tissue sample) does not indicate prostate cancer, a prostate cancer gene test may be performed.
