What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy, also called cryosurgery, is a procedure used for treating a variety of benign and malignant lesions and tumors. The treatment applies extreme cold (produced by liquid nitrogen) to destroy abnormal or diseased tissues. It is often used to treat tumors inside the body, including prostate cancer.

For internal tumors, such as prostate cancer, liquid nitrogen is circulated through a hollow instrument to the tumor. Imaging equipment is used to guide the instrument and view the freezing treatment. After cryosurgery, frozen tissue thaws and is absorbed by the body or removed by the doctor.

Cryotherapy is an alternative treatment for patients who are not candidates for traditional open surgery because of age or other medical conditions. It is a treatment plan used for cancerous conditions, like prostate cancer, alongside chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Cryotherapy is less invasive than surgery and may minimize pain, bleeding and other surgical complications for the patient.
