Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) for Weight Loss

The Institute for Digestive Health & Liver Disease at Mercy - Baltimore, MD

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), offered by expert GI physician, Dr. Sergey Kantsevoy, is a non-surgical weight loss procedure, ideal for many patients who do not qualify for bariatric surgery due to their BMI (body mass index) or other health conditions.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure - patients typically go home the same day and do not require an overnight hospital stay.

What is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, also called ESG, is a non-surgical weight loss procedure that uses an endoscope to reduce the size of the stomach. The endoscope is inserted into the throat to access the stomach. No external cuts or stitches are needed to complete the procedure.

The doctor uses the endoscope to make a series of small folds along the stomach, which is why the procedure is sometimes referred to as the “accordion procedure.” The new stomach shape resembles a banana and is held in place with tiny sutures.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty makes changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight by:

  • Reducing the size of your stomach and the amount of food you can eat
  • Causing hormonal changes that lower your appetite and
  • Reducing the amount of food absorbed by your body

ESG currently is not covered by insurance. If you are interested in learning about the cost of ESG, please contact us. We do not offer payment plans at this time.

What are the benefits of Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty?

ESG is advantageous as a weight loss solution since it is a non-surgical procedure and typically does not require hospitalization. It remains a good option for obese patients who do not qualify for bariatric surgery.

Those considering ESG should keep in mind that the procedure can help them lose a moderate amount of weight. The total weight loss after ESG typically is not as drastic as bariatric surgery results.

Overall, weight loss procedures typically improve conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, liver disease, sleep apnea and joint pain, as well as reduce cancer risk. Additionally, significant weight loss can contribute to a better mental state and improved self-esteem.
