What is a Tendon Graft?

A tendon graft is a human tendon from a donor that is used to reconstruct tendon and ligament problems around the foot and ankle.

These are usually required when a patient does not have enough of his/her own normal tissue to perform the repair successfully. The most common uses are in the Achilles tendon, peroneal tendons, and the lateral ankle ligaments.

The donor tendons are harvested immediately after death and are screened for multiple diseases including HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Once the donor tendons have passed all of the tests, they are sterilized and stored frozen until ready for use in the operating room.
