Blepharoplasty Performed by Cosmetic Surgeons in Baltimore

As you age your eyelids loosen and the muscles supporting them weaken. Consequently, excess fat can form above and below the eyelids, resulting in droopy eyelids. To help patients achieve a more natural looking, youthful eyelid, the plastic surgeons of Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery at Mercy use treatments such as a blepharoplasty, or eye lift.

What is a Blepharoplasty (or Eye Lift)?

Blepharoplasty is the surgical removal of excess skin, muscle and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids to repair droopy eyelids. When excess fat forms above and below your eyelids, it usually causes bags under the eyes, sagging eyebrows and forms drooping upper eyelids. Sagging skin around the eyes can cause impaired vision.

Blepharoplasty can eliminate such impaired vision and is sometimes performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty (nose job), brow lift and facelift.

Who can benefit from Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty may be an option for you if you have:

  • Puffy upper eyelids
  • Surplus skin of the upper eyelid that impairs your vision
  • Droopy lower eyelids with excess skin
  • Bags under your eyes

Are there other treatments used to enhance the Blepharoplasty treatment?

When performing a blepharoplasty, sometimes Botox® injections are used to fill the hollow area under the eyelid.

Is Blepharoplasty a permanent procedure?

The results of the blepharoplasty are permanent. It should be noted that a blepharoplasty will not prevent future wrinkles from occurring.

How long does it take to perform Blepharoplasty and what is the recovery time?

The blepharoplasty procedure takes approximately 1-3 hours. The recovery time after having blepharoplasty is typically 1-2 weeks. However, patients who had a lower eyelid blepharoplasty may experience bruising and swelling for several weeks. After having a blepharoplasty, patients can typically return to work within one to two weeks.
