A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. A recurrent urinary tract infection is defined by a person who experiences at least two infections of the bladder in six months, or three infections in one year.
Typically affecting women more often than men, these infections occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra. While painful if limited to the bladder, urinary tract infections can cause serious problems in the kidneys if not treated properly.
Recurrent urinary tract infections do not always cause signs and symptoms, but they may include:
- A persistent urge to urinate
- A burning sensation during urination
- Blood in the urine
- Urine that is cloudy
- Fever
- Lower back pain
- Pelvic pain in women
- Rectal pain in men
Recurrent urinary tract infections are most commonly diagnosed with a urine test; however, other tests may be necessary to diagnose chronic conditions. A cystoscopy may be performed to diagnose recurrent urinary tract infections.
