Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) Offered at Mercy

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an innovative treatment option available at Radiation Oncology at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. This procedure is commonly used by our radiation oncologists for tumors that may be difficult to treat through more conventional methods.

What is Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy?

Intensity modulated radiation therapy is a sophisticated, computer-guided radiation therapy technique in which precise doses of radiation are delivered to very specific areas, conforming to the shape of the tumor. The radiation stops the cancer cells from dividing and growing. Intensity modulated radiation therapy reduces the radiation’s exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

How is Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy performed?

Using 3-D computed tomography (CT) images of the patient, IMRT allows for the radiation dose to conform to the shape of the tumor by controlling the intensity of the beam and as a result, more healthy tissue can be avoided to limit side effects of treatment.

Radiation Oncology at Mercy offers cancer patients access to state-of-art radiation therapies and an experienced medical team.
