Unless you have completely avoided the internet and social media for the past few years, you’ve probably heard that some people who are dealing with obesity have been able to lose weight through medication. What exactly are these weight-loss medications? How much weight can they help you lose? And are they right for you?

What Kinds of Medications Can Help Me Lose Weight?

GLP-1 Agonists

GLP-1 agonists are a class of drugs that can treat various chronic conditions. Some were developed specifically to treat obesity, while others were developed to treat illnesses associated with obesity, such as diabetes and heart disease. Most GLP-1 drugs are taken via injection rather than orally.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1 that is produced by your small intestine. Among other duties, the GLP-1 hormone:

  • Delays your stomach emptying its contents, which makes you feel fuller for longer
  • Works with your brain to reduce your appetite

By performing the tasks of the GLP-1 hormone, GLP-1 drugs often lead to notable weight loss.

Other Weight-Loss Medications

A number of other medications can help with weight loss as well. Some are intended to produce weight loss through appetite suppression, while others are meant to treat an unrelated health condition but have weight loss as a side effect. Your Mercy doctor will be able to give your more details on these medications if they determine that you are eligible for medical weight loss.

Which Weight-Loss Medication is Right for Me?

There are a number of factors to consider with your Mercy doctor when determining which weight-loss medication is the best option for you. These factors include:

  • How much weight you need to lose
  • Other medications you are currently taking
  • Personal or family history of high blood pressure
  • Personal history of substance use disorder
  • Personal or family history of thyroid cancer
  • Being pregnant

How Much Weight Can I Lose with Weight-Loss Medication?

Depending on the weight-loss medication you take, you can lose between 11 and 22 percent of your starting weight if you also implement lifestyle changes, such as healthier eating and more physical activity. Weight-loss medication is not meant to be a standalone solution to obesity.

If you are only looking to lose five to 10 pounds, weight-loss medication is not the best option for you. Talk to your Mercy doctor about alternative solutions.
