Cramping is a normal occurrence for most women, but how do you know if it's something more serious?

Painful periods have two main causes: one is just the uterus cramping and the second cause could be anything from fibroids to endometriosis.

According to gynecologist Meghan Lynch, M.D., FACOG, of The Institute of Gynecologic Care at Mercy, a normal period lasts three to seven days and you may have some cramps. If taking over-the-counter medications is not enough, you may want to see your doctor you have pain in the rest of your body, pain with bowel movements, pain with urination or pain with intercourse, that's something to bring to your doctor's attention, as well," Dr. Lynch said.

If this is a persistent issue for you and becomes worse over time, see your doctor. Dr. Lynch also notes exercise, eating well and getting good sleep can help your periods.
