In a tribute to its 150-year history and commitment to providing quality, compassionate care to the people of Baltimore, Mercy Medical Center is pleased to announce that Dr. David Maine, president and CEO of Mercy Health Services, will be honored with the ceremonial first pitch at the Baltimore Orioles home game at Camden Yards, Thursday, August 15, 2024.

Sister Helen Amos, RSM, Mercy Board of Trustees Executive Chair, will receive the Orioles Heavy Hitter Award in recognition of the more than 800 Mercy employees who will be attending the game that evening. She’ll appear on the Orioles scoreboard as she accepts a game ball autographed by Orioles players.

Dr. Maine’s ceremonial pitch will kick off the evening’s festivities as the Orioles face off against the Boston Red Sox. This special occasion celebrates not only the hospital's significant milestone but also its longstanding relationship with the Baltimore community.

“Having been raised in Rochester, New York, I saw my fair share of [Rochester] Red Wings games at Silver Stadium, when they were the Triple AAA farm club of the Orioles. Coming to Baltimore, it was natural that I’d be an Orioles fan. I am excited to make the ceremonial first pitch, as a fan, as a local resident, and in my role at Mercy Medical Center, now in its 150th year of caring for the people of this city and beyond,” Dr. Maine said.

Mercy was founded in 1874 when, upon the request of local doctors, six Sisters of Mercy came to Baltimore to take charge of the Baltimore City Hospital health dispensary - a merger between the College of Physicians and Surgeons and Washington Medical College. The hospital was renamed Mercy Hospital in 1909, and Mercy Medical Center in 1988.

The game is set to begin at 6:35 p.m., with Dr. Maine’s ceremonial first pitch scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Gates to Oriole Park at Camden Yards open at 5:30 p.m.
