Fat Grafting After Lumpectomy at Mercy in Baltimore

Fat grafting after lumpectomy is one of the many breast reconstruction treatment options offered by the plastic surgeons at The Breast Reconstruction & Restoration Center at Mercy. Providing specialized expertise in this surgical treatment, Dr. Craig Vander Kolk offers women an alternative so they can maintain a more natural breast shape following lumpectomy.

What is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting, also called fat transfer, is used to achieve natural breast restoration following lumpectomy. During a fat grafting procedure, our doctors utilize healthy fat cells from other areas of the body to fill the mild to moderate breast defects that can sometimes occur after a lumpectomy.

Fat grafting is sometimes used as the sole means of breast reconstruction, or it may be used in conjunction with other types of breast reconstruction.

What are the benefits of Fat Grafting for breast restoration?

Advanced fat-grafting techniques are safe, minimally invasive, outpatient procedures. Fat grafting can correct skin color changes, distortions such as dimples, divits or depressions and lost breast volume. The procedure also has the benefit of fat removal (liposuction) directly from the patient.

Are additional breast surgeries needed following Fat Grafting?

Following fat grafting, additional procedures may be necessary to achieve or maintain the desired breast volume.
