Elbow Ligament Tears Treated by Top Mercy Surgeons
At The Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, orthopedic surgeons specialize in injuries to the elbow, including ligament tears and muscle tears.
The elbow consists of three ligaments:
- Ulnar collateral ligament
- Radial collateral ligament
- Annular ligament
An ulnar collateral ligament is the most common elbow ligament tear. The ulnar collateral ligament is located in the elbow’s inner side and can be injured from overuse during overhead activities, such as throwing a baseball or playing tennis.
Tears to the radial collateral ligament and the annular ligament are not as prevalent as an ulnar collateral ligament tear.
Symptoms of an elbow ligament tear include:
- Pain
- Catching or popping
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Limited motion
An orthopedic specialist will perform a physical exam to diagnose a ligament tear in the elbow. An X-ray, MRI, ultrasound and CT also may be taken to provide a better view of the elbow’s ligaments and location of a tear.
Treatment options for elbow ligament tears include:
- Rest
- Immobilization
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Physical therapy
Surgery may be the best treatment option when non-surgical options do not provide relieve of ligament tear symptoms. Surgery can consist of repair and reconstruction of the ligament.
