What is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of the internal organs and tissues, and provides clinicians a non-invasive and painless way to see inside the body to detect certain tumors, pregnancy and other conditions.
When is Ultrasound used?
Ultrasound may be used alone or in conjunction with other types of imaging to help a doctor diagnose or rule out a condition. Examples of the use of ultrasound include:
- Breast cancer detection, especially in the case of dense breast tissue
- Examination of blood flow, blood vessels and the heart
- Examination of pelvic or abdominal organs
- Pregnancy detection and fetal monitoring
