Mercy offers an experienced team of licensed dietitians and diabetes educators to support a wide range of health conditions and many of Mercy's Center of Excellence programs.
Our Experts
Mercy's dynamic team of diabetes and nutrition educators includes experts who are leaders in their field, frequently sought out by local and national media for commentary on diabetes and nutrition issues. Patients at Mercy have direct access to these experts, who provide classes, support groups, counseling and education to help patients navigate daily life with their condition.
Nutrition Education
Mercy's team of certified dietitians offer in-depth nutrition education, recipes, cooking advice and weight management strategies for patients experiencing a range of health concerns, including but not limited to:
- Diabetes
- Gestational diabetes

- Obesity
- Weight loss surgery (preparation and post-surgical management)

Diabetes Education
The Center for Endocrinology at Mercy offers comprehensive diabetes management programs. Mercy's team of doctors, diabetes educators and licensed dietitians help patients develop appropriate diabetes management plans that include nutrition counseling and glucose monitoring. The diabetes management team offers individual and group counseling to help patients achieve successful day-to-day management of their diabetes.
Mercy’s diabetes nurse educators and licensed dietitians provide:
- Basic diabetes knowledge and management (what the condition is and how it is treated)
- Nutrition management and meal planning
- Exercise and activity plans
- Instruction on glucose monitoring
- Information on the prevention and management of complications, both acute and chronic
- Counseling for the adjustment to living with diabetes
- Problem-solving skills and management of behavioral changes
- Stress management
- Medications if needed
The Center for Endocrinology at Mercy has been recognized as part of the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program and by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education.

Diabetes Education Classes
The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program is a two-part series with a follow-up class. Topics covered during the series include healthy eating, physical activity, monitoring, managing medications, risk reduction and problem solving.
