What is Ankle Arthroscopy?

Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that helps to alleviate ankle pain caused by various foot and ankle conditions or injuries, such as osteochondral injury of the talus, some forms of tendonitis, ankle fractures, ankle sprains and ankle impingement. Ankle arthroscopy may be an alternate treatment option to open ankle surgery in some cases.

How is Ankle Arthroscopy performed?

Ankle arthroscopy is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. At least two incisions are made – one to insert a camera and the others to insert instruments. During an ankle arthroscopy, the foot and ankle surgeon will repair or remove any damage to the ankle.

Often ankle injuries will cause ligament, tissue, cartilage and bone damage that needs to be corrected to help alleviate the clicking or locking of the ankle as well as ankle pain. Soft tissue, cartilage and ligaments can be trimmed and repaired and bone spurs and loose bodies, such as scar tissue and debris, can be removed.
