Rheumatologist Dr. Sadia Khan Discusses Women & Psoriatic Arthritis Symptoms

Psoriatic arthritis is a double-whammy of autoimmune disorders. Not only do psoriatic arthritis symptoms mimic those of psoriasis, like patches of red, scaly skin, but they can also cause the painful swollen joints that are common with rheumatoid arthritis.

The symptoms can change from day to day and person to person, making psoriatic arthritis a particularly tricky disease to diagnose and manage.

According to Sadia Khan M.D., a board certified rheumatologist with Rheumatology at Mercy, symptoms left untreated can lead to permanent joint damage.

“Symptoms of it can be involvement of different areas of the skeleton. It could be in joint involvement, including fingers and feet, which would be considered small joints. It could include large joints, including hips and shoulders and sometimes it can also affect the spine,” Dr. Khan said.

There are several medications that can treat and change the disease. Some target the immune system and there are injectables and oral medications available.
