A new study finds women develop Alzheimer's-related brain changes earlier than men. For every man suffering with Alzheimer's, there are two women.

Experts say it's not just because women live longer -- they also start showing the telltale signs of Alzheimer's earlier on in life, specifically in midlife.

According to primary and geriatric care specialist Dr. Ernestine Wrightmenopause is the strongest predictor of brain changes in women, followed by history of hysterectomy.

"Now, we know for the first time that it may be related to hormone levels and disruptions that occur with the onset of menopause. So we have an opportunity to try to intervene earlier to prevent dementia of the Alzheimer's type," Dr. Wright said.

By delaying menopause, there's a greater chance of decreasing the onset of the disease decades later. Eating well, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight can help delay the onset of menopause.

After menopause, hormone replacement therapy is something to discuss with your doctor.
