The Society for Breast Imaging recommends women schedule their annual mammogram before getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

The recommendation follows increasing reports of a side effect following vaccination swollen, abnormal-appearing lymph nodes in the armpit on the side where the vaccine was administered.

According to board certified radiologist Dr. Jean Warner, Director, The Tyanna O’Brien Center for Women’s Imaging at Mercy, on a mammogram, these swollen lymph nodes can be falsely interpreted as a sign of breast cancer.

"So, we are at least suggesting that women consider scheduling their mammogram in conjunction with their COVID-19 vaccination. Either they get their mammogram first, if due for mammogram, get your mammogram now, and then get you COVID-19 vaccine," Dr. Warner said.

Or, if you have already started getting your vaccine, Dr. Warner recommends delaying the mammogram until four to six weeks after your last dose of the vaccine to avoid a false positive and potential call back.
