Blood in the Urine Treated by Mercy's Urology Specialists
Patients throughout the Baltimore region seek the expertise of The Urology Specialists of Maryland at Mercy Medical Center. Our team of urologists treats a broad range of urologic disorders and diseases including bladder, prostate and kidney cancers.
For most people, seeing blood in their urine (medically called hematuria) can be alarming, but common activities like strenuous exercise or taking certain drugs or eating certain foods (which change the color of urine) can cause this condition. However, blood in the urine can also indicate more serious issues like an enlarged prostate, kidney or bladder infections, kidney or bladder stones, or kidney or bladder cancers, so it’s important to call the doctor when this occurs.
People often think of blood as a deep red color, but blood in the urine can be red, pink, orange or brown. When blood in the urine is identified, our doctors may do one or more of the following tests:
- Urine test
- Blood test
- Imaging tests (CT scan/MRI/ultrasound)
- Cystoscopy
