Hydrocele is fluid accumulation around the testicles. The fluid causes the groin to swell, but it is often more uncomfortable than painful.  This condition is common in newborn male babies, but it can happen in later life as well. In some cases, the swelling may be a symptom of testicular cancer.

Swelling in the scrotum (the pouch behind the penis) is the primary symptom of hydrocele. Patients may also feel some pain or a pressure at the base of the penis.  Diagnosis requires a physical exam of the scrotum and possibly an ultrasound screening. 

Hydroceles are only treated when it causes pain or embarrassment because of the swelling. Younger men usually find the condition resolves itself; in older men, it does not usually go back to normal.  Hydroceles can be drained, but often swelling occurs again. 

Hydrocele surgery is the treatment option if the condition becomes painful or very enlarged.
