3D Laparoscopy Treatment for Endometriosis

Dr. Kevin Audlin and his colleagues of The Institute for Gynecologic Care at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, is among a select group of surgeons within the U.S. to offer women articulating, high definition 3D laparoscopy. This advanced surgical procedure often provides surgeons with more clear and precise visibility when treating gynecologic conditions such as endometriosis.

What is 3D Laparoscopy?

Three dimensional (3D) laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a thin, lighted tube known as a laparoscope to examine and treat abnormal conditions of abdominal or female pelvic organs. It is similar to a traditional operative laparoscopy, but has the added advantage of providing three dimensional images of the tissue being operated on.

Mercy’s state-of-the-art, high definition 3D laparoscopic surgical system provides our surgeons improved depth of visualization and clearer images. The increased and enhanced vision provides surgeons another option when facing more complex and technically difficult surgeries and procedures.

How is 3D Laparoscopy performed?

3D laparoscopy is performed much like traditional operative laparoscopy. A 3D laparoscope is inserted through a small incision (typically less than ½ inch) made in the abdominal area. The laparoscope provides three dimensional images of the abdominal cavity or pelvic region for the surgeon to view. The surgeon may also use the laparoscope or additional small incisions in the abdomen to insert specially designed instruments needed to complete the surgical procedure.

When is 3D Laparoscopy utilized?

A 3D laparoscopic surgical procedure may be used to examine and treat a wide range of gynecologic conditions. The surgeons at Mercy Medical Center often utilize this advanced technology for complex surgeries and procedures requiring better visibility, including the following:

  • Endometriosis
  • Total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH)
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy
  • Laparoscopic adhesiolysis (abdominal adhesions)

Why choose Mercy for 3D Laparoscopy?
