What is a Hysterectomy?
Hysterectomy is a surgery to remove the uterus or womb, known as a partial hysterectomy, or both the uterus and the cervix, known as a total hysterectomy. In some cases, the ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed. After a hysterectomy, you no longer have menstrual periods and cannot become pregnant.
How is a Hysterectomy performed?
Hysterectomy may be performed several different ways, including the following:
- Abdominal – completed through an incision in the lower belly area where the uterus and/or cervix is removed
- Vaginal – completed through an incision in the vagina where the uterus and/or cervix is removed
- Laparoscopic – performed with the aid of a laparoscope, an instrument with a thin, lighted tube and small camera that allows your doctor to see your pelvic organs
- Robotic surgery – performed with the aid of robotic arms and 3D technology for increased precision
