What is a Hysteroscopy?

Operative hysteroscopy is a procedure used to treat causes of abnormal bleeding. Doctors use a tool known as a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube, to perform a surgical hysteroscopy within the uterus and cervical canal. Surgeons may use the hysteroscope as a diagnostic tool prior to performing surgical hysteroscopy. This is known as diagnostic hysteroscopy.

Operative hysteroscopy is a less invasive procedure than a traditional hysterectomy and does not always require hospitalization. 

How is a Hysteroscopy performed?

During an operative hysteroscopy, your doctor will insert a hysteroscope into the vagina and through the cervix. Your doctor may utilize the hysteroscope as a diagnostic tool first in order to examine the uterus. In some cases, a video screen will aid in the procedure.

During an operative hysteroscopy, additional instruments may be placed through the hysteroscope to correct abnormal conditions discovered during the diagnosis process. In many cases, both procedures may be completed at the same time, eliminating the need for a second surgery.
