The Vascular Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland offers comprehensive care for circulatory system disorders. Our vascular surgeons offer advanced treatment options, including vascular bypass surgery to restore proper blood flow.

What is Vascular Bypass Surgery?

Vascular bypass surgery redirects blood flow through another blood vessel to avert the artery or vein that is damaged or blocked. The blood vessel used to bypass an area may be a natural vein or artery from another part of the body or one that is man-made. It is usually done for severe peripheral arterial disease (PAD) such as disabling leg pain or gangrene.

Types of Vascular Bypass Surgery procedures

Vascular bypass surgery is identified by the area affected and can include:

  • Aortobifemoral bypass – for surgery to the major abdominal artery and those that branch off from it.
  • Femoropopliteal bypass – for surgery in the thighs and knees.
  • Femoral-tibial bypass – for surgery in the lower legs or feet.

How is Vascular Bypass Surgery performed?

Using a blood vessel from another part of the body, or in some cases, a man-made blood vessel, a vascular surgeon creates a new path around the blockage allowing blood to flow freely.

Who should receive Vascular Bypass Surgery?

Bypass surgery is usually reserved for patients who have severe peripheral arterial disease or a blockage that is life threatening.
The Vascular Center at Mercy offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of circulatory system disorders including stroke and mini stroke, leg pain and swelling, blood clots in veins, aneurysms, varicose veins and circulatory disease.
