Dr. Ayesha Cheema of Mercy Personal Physicians at Columbia Discusses Persistent Headaches
April 15, 2019

Most of the time, a headache goes away after a few hours, but sometimes, it seems to last forever. Those persistent headaches can be caused by taking too many over-the-counter painkillers, depression, anxiety, and sleep apnea (one of the most common causes) and other sleep issues.
"Sleep is the most important thing. Most of the time, patients will come in and say they have a headache, and low and behold, it all boils down to they're not getting enough sleep or enough rest. The body needs rest," explains Dr. Ayesha Cheema of Mercy Personal Physicians at Columbia.
According to Dr. Cheema, there are some warning signs of a more serious problem: If a headache feels different or more severe than usual, is accompanied by fever or neck stiffness, dizziness or slurred speech or confusion, get medical attention right away.
