What is Hip Replacement Surgery?
Hip replacement surgery relieves hip pain by replacing the diseased hip joint with an artificial joint. Prior to hip replacement surgery, an orthopedic surgeon will conduct an evaluation and take X-rays to assess the extent of the hip damage. Together the orthopedic surgeon and patient will decide if hip replacement surgery is the best treatment for a patient’s hip pain.
Types of Hip Replacement Surgery procedures:
Hip replacement surgery can include:
- Traditional total hip replacement
- Anterior approach for total hip placement
How is Hip Replacement Surgery performed?
During a traditional total hip replacement, a 10-12 inch incision is made on the side or back of the hip. The hip is accessed by cutting through muscles and tendons.
During an anterior approach to total hip replacement, a 4-5 inch incision is made on the front, or anterior, of the hip through natural muscle intervals, preventing the need to cut muscles or tendons.
When is Hip Replacement Surgery the best option?
A number of conditions can cause severe hip damage and pain, including:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Avascular necrosis
If medications, changes in daily activities, and walking aids do not relieve pain, a hip replacement may be the best treatment option.
