A body lift can improve your body image and build self confidence. The doctors of Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery at Mercy understand the importance of improving one’s self image. Among the best plastic surgeons in the Mid-Atlantic region, our doctors are sought out by patients throughout Maryland for their compassionate care and surgical skills for a variety of cosmetic surgery options including a body lift.
What is a Body Lift?
A body lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is used to remove or tighten excess skin and sagging fatty tissue. A body lift can be performed on the lower body and upper body.
A lower body lift, also known as a lipectomy, restores contour to the lower midsection of the body, which includes the tummy, thighs, buttocks and back. An upper body lift concentrates on the breasts, chest and middle back. If both the lower and upper body lifts are performed, this treatment option is known as a total body lift. A body lift is sometimes performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck.
Who should consider having a Body Lift?
If you are considering a body lift at Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery at Mercy, you will need to meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Maintained a stable weight for six months
- Active in a healthy exercise and diet program
- Wait one year after Gastric bypass and Lap-Band surgery
A body lift is ideal for patients who have experienced substantial weight loss after bariatric surgery procedures, such as Gastric bypass and Lap-Band. Body lifts also can help mothers get back their pre-pregnancy bodies. If you’re planning to have children, you should wait until after childbearing before having a body lift.
How is the Body Lift performed?
The lower body lift begins with a belt-like incision above the outer thighs and buttocks. The surgeon then removes the excess skin and reshapes the underlying tissue. This is followed by the tummy tuck or abdominoplasty.
The upper body lift begins with wide bra-line skin removal. Once the incision is closed, the surgeon will remove the rolls of fat tissue from the back and narrow the waist. All remaining skin under the breast or over the rib cage is eliminated.
What is the recovery expectation after having a Body Lift?
As with any major surgery, a body lift requires a substantial recovery time. Most patients can return to normal activities after 4-6 weeks and can return to exercising typically within 6-8 weeks.
