What is Fracture Repair?

A fracture occurs when there is an injury or stress applied to a bone that causes the bone to break.

Sometimes after a fracture the two broken ends of the bone can remain straight and do not require surgery. However, if the two pieces have moved apart or are angled in such a way that it would interfere with normal walking, surgery to repair the fracture is necessary.

Fracture repair involves re-aligning and straightening the bones back to their normal anatomic alignment. In some minor fractures this can be done with no or minimally invasive incisions. When the injury is more significant, open reduction of the fractured bones through a larger incision and fixing the two ends together with plates and screws is necessary.
