Ureteroscopy Used to Treat Kidney Stones
The Urology Specialists of Maryland at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, diagnoses and treats a variety of urologic conditions and diseases. Our doctors utilize ureteroscopy for the examination of patients with kidney stones.
What is Ureteroscopy?
Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive examination of the upper urinary tract to diagnose and treat kidney stones that may be stuck in the ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder).
How is a Ureteroscopy performed?
Ureteroscopy exam utilizes an endoscope (a thin instrument) that is passed through the urethra (tube that takes urine out of the body) and bladder and then into the ureter. No surgical incisions are required for this exam. The scope reaches the kidney stone stuck in the ureter and manipulates it to push it back into the kidney. When the stone is back in the kidney, it may be broken up using lithotripsy shock wave treatment.
