There is a new, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery used to treat a variety of gynecological conditions.

Kevin M. Audlin, M.D., FACOG, Co-Director, The Endometriosis Center, Institute for Gynecologic Care at Mercy Medical Center, is the first doctor in the mid-Atlantic region to use 3 millimeter tools for minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for gynecologic conditions.

According to Dr. Audlin, the tools have gotten smaller and smaller. They used to be 10-12 millimeters, then five, and now they measure at just three millimeters.

"What I'm seeing is significant improvement in outcomes; quicker return to work, less pain, less narcotic usage, which is huge," Dr. Audlin said.

"I started feeling this horrible pain last July before I went to Greece. I almost didn't go because of the pain," patient Sarah Asdenti said.

Asdenti was able to make that trip after the minimally invasive surgery, not just for her endometriosis, but for an umbilical hernia, ovarian cyst and for her appendix. Dr. Audlin was able to do it all in one procedure. Two months post-op, she's feeling great.

Dr. Audlin added that most patients don't see much of a scar at all.
