For parents, keeping kids safe from the coronavirus is a top priority.

Health experts say, based on current evidence, children do not appear to be at higher risk for the virus than adults. Even though we have seen some cases in children in Maryland, adults make up the majority of known cases.

According to board certified pediatrician Dr. Ashanti Woods of Mercy Family Care Physicians, kids need to do what we all need to do: practice social distancing.

“There shouldn't be any get-togethers at a neighbor's house. Kids should be at home. Obviously, siblings can interact as they normally would, but in terms of going over to a friend's house, it's not a good idea right now. It’s okay for children to be in their backyard playing,” Dr. Woods said.

Dr. Woods added that now is the perfect time to let them use the backyard for lessons on nature, and to instruct them on how best to practice good hygiene.
