Hepatitis C is a silent disease and most times patients have no symptoms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends universal screening for all adults.

According to Dr. Anurag Maheshwari, a specialist in liver disease with The Center for Liver and Hepatobiliary Diseases, part of The Melissa L. Posner Institute for Digestive Health & Liver Disease at Mercy it is especially important for women of childbearing age and should be part of prenatal checkups, and there are accepted treatments for hepatitis C.

“However, we cannot use those treatments during the course of pregnancy. Most of the times, we will recommend patients complete their pregnancy and then come back to us for therapy,” Dr. Maheshwari said.

Hepatitis C is not transmitted through breast milk.
