Dr. Sergey Kantsevoy Discusses Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), Alternative for Those Who Don't Qualify for Bariatric Surgery
October 19, 2020
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty or ESG is a non-surgical weight loss procedure that is ideal for many patients who do not qualify for bariatric surgery due to body mass index or other health conditions.
It reduces the size of the stomach so that each time you eat, you consume less food in volume. According to Mercy’s Dr. Sergey Kantsevoy, a nationally recognized doctor in therapeutic endoscopy for GI conditions, ESG is an outpatient procedure that takes about one hour.
“People who are not big enough to go for gastric bypass, we are doing somebody who cannot lose weight on their own but they need to lose a moderate amount of weight -- 40 to 60 to a 100 pounds,” Dr. Kantsevoy said.
The patient has to be on a liquid diet for about one month before returning to a regular diet. The procedure is reversible.
