Mercy Receives 5-Star Rating for Medicare and Medicaid Services for 2021
June 02, 2021
CMS rated more than 4,500 hospitals from one to five stars, with five representing the highest quality rating. Of 4,586 hospitals, 13.5% or 455 hospitals, received five stars; 988 received four stars; 1,018 received three stars; 690 received two stars; and 204 received one star.
In Maryland, Mercy was one of only three hospitals to receive an overall 5-star rating. The Overall Hospital Quality Star rating summarizes a number of measures across five areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital. Scores are based on five measure groups, including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care.
The CMS Hospital Star Ratings system uses a simple, easily recognizable one through five star format. The ratings target consumers to aid in health care decision-making, as patients continue to play a bigger role in managing their own care.
The ratings system is a key tool for hospitals as well. Those medical institutions which wish to remain competitive and earn the highest ratings must be aware of how CMS calculates the ratings and how best to utilize them to improve their care and services to patients.
The star ratings for hospital quality were launched in 2007.
