Caring for Your Immune System During Chemotherapy
September 06, 2022
In many cases, chemotherapy can help shrink tumors or stop them from growing, but certain types of chemotherapy medications can also weaken the immune system, leaving a person vulnerable to infections.
According to Sandy D. Kotiah, M.D., a board certified medical oncologist and Director of The Neuroendocrine Tumor Center at Mercy, there are simple things patients can do to care for their immune systems.
"There are basic things you can do to boost your immune system," said Dr. Kotiah. "Sleeping eight hours each night, exercising, watching your stress level, staying hydrated, and eating nutritious, well-balanced meals, all play a role in helping to support your immune system. It is also very important to wash your hands to avoid germs."
Additionally, Dr. Kotiah added that people should ask their doctor whether they should take any medications to help boost their immune system or prevent infection.
