Whether a multivitamin should be taken really depends on the person.

According to Mercy Medical Center certified nurse practitioner Tiffanie France, CRNP, some people don't need to take a multivitamin.

However, for those who have an absorption issue, a vitamin deficiency or eat a certain type of diet, a multivitamin or a specific vitamin supplement may be something the doctor recommends.

"Certain people with deficiencies, such as Vitamin D deficiency, depending on dietary intake, and people who omit red meat, vegans, vegetarians - they may require a multivitamin B12 supplement," France said.

France added that most people can get the vitamins they need through what they eat, but they should talk with a doctor to determine whether taking a multivitamin might be beneficial.
