Neil B. Rosenshein, M.D., FACOG, recognized as one of the nation's finest gynecologic oncologists and surgeons, and the first medical director of The Weinberg Center for Women's Health and Medicine at Mercy Medical Center, has announced his retirement effective December 31, 2024.
"The Sisters of Mercy and I join the Mercy family in saluting Dr. Neil Rosenshein who helped establish The Weinberg Center for Women's Health and Medicine as our first Center of Excellence in 1994. Throughout his 50-year career, but most notably during his 30 years at Mercy, Dr. Rosenshein has been known for his commitment to advance women's health, research and medical education," said Dr. David N. Maine, President and CEO, Mercy Health Services, Mercy Medical Center.
Dr. Rosenshein played a leadership role in polling his patients, the Mercy Women's Advisory Board, and others, gathering information from women that would shape the $43 million Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Center for Women's Health and Medicine which opened in September 2003.
According to Dr. Maine, as Director of the Weinberg Center, Dr. Rosenshein helped launch a number of key initiatives, including service excellence training for the women's center staff, elevating medical education for surgeons, physicians, and advanced practice providers, and enhancing the patient experience with the introduction of valet parking, staff uniforms for front line employees and more.
A board certified gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Rosenshein has devoted his medical career to advancing surgical techniques to treat ovarian, cervical, uterine, endometrial, vulvar and vaginal cancers. In addition to his role with the Weinberg Center, Dr. Rosenshein also served as Director of The Gynecologic Oncology Collaborative, a network of gyn-cancer centers throughout Maryland, and Director of The Lya Segall Ovarian Cancer Institute at Mercy, the first center in Maryland designed solely for the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.
Dr. Rosenshein is involved in medical research projects keeping his hand in leading edge treatment options for patients. Since 1998, Dr. Rosenshein has conducted one of the region’s most prestigious medical education conferences re: advances in women's healthcare. In 2003, Dr. Neil Rosenshein served as the primary investigator for a national study identifying markers in the blood that may find tumors, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
"Dr. Rosenshein would often begin his lectures saying, 'patients are at the heart of all we do,' a sentiment at the heart of our mission at Mercy," said Sister Helen Amos, RSM, former Mercy president and CEO and now Executive Chair of the Mercy Board of Trustees. "Women throughout the Mid-Atlantic region who faced life-changing gynecologic cancers trusted Dr. Rosenshein with their care, knowing they would have one of the best GYN oncologists in the nation treating their cancer and offering the compassion they needed throughout their journey," she said.
Dr. Rosenshein has been published in numerous publications (NEJM, JAMA, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology) and written or co-authored several books through his career including the Manual of Gynecologic Oncology; Surgery in Retroperitoneal Space: An Operative Gynecology Videobook (co-author); Ultrasonic Surgical Techniques for the Pelvic Surgeon (co-author). Having published more than 170 papers, chapters and books, he established an international reputation for his research and clinical skills.
Dr. Rosenshein was named Humanitarian of the Year (2002) by the Mildred Mindell Cancer Foundation.
