Mercy Gastroenterologist Dr. Sara Yacyshyn Discusses Impact of Hormones on Digestion
October 14, 2025
According to Sara Yacyshyn, M.D., a board-certified gastroenterologist with The Melissa L. Posner Institute for Digestive Health & Liver Disease, hormones increase and decrease, especially during certain times in a woman's life like pregnancy or during pre- or post-menopause.
Hormones, especially progesterone, can have an impact on mobility or smooth muscle movements, especially during the second half of the menstrual cycle or early on in pregnancy. That can cause constipation and increase the risk of heartburn. Hormone fluctuations are normal, but she said if people make changes and still have symptoms, it is time to see a doctor.
“When it comes to lower-GI (gastrointestinal) symptoms, such as constipation and diarrhea, if you make the changes—such as increasing fiber in your diet, you’re drinking adequate water, you’re staying active—and you’re still having issues, that’s a good time to talk to your gastroenterologist,” Dr. Yacyshyn said.
If symptoms don’t improve, there are treatments available, such as over-the-counter or prescription medications. A doctor may also suggest an endoscopy to take a look inside your digestive tract.
