Parathyroid Disease Diagnosed and Treated by Mercy’s Cancer Doctors
The cancer doctors of Surgical Oncology at Mercy in Baltimore perform advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures to manage endocrine tumors of the adrenal glands, thyroid, parathyroid and pancreas. Our surgical oncologists work closely with Mercy’s endocrinologists to diagnose and treat parathyroid disease.
About Parathyroid Disease
Parathyroid glands are four small glands that are typically located behind the thyroid gland or around the jaw or neck. The glands secrete PHT hormones that regulate calcium exchange between your blood and bones. If the glands are overactive and remove too much calcium from your bones you may develop parathyroid disease or hyperparathyroidism.
Symptoms & Diagnosis
In early stages parathyroid disease may not present symptoms. Later stage symptoms may include:
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Weakness or cramps in the muscles
- Pain in joints and bones
- Constipation
- Kidney stones
- Depression
- Sleep loss or restlessness at night
Endocrine doctors can perform tests to measure the hormone levels produced by your parathyroid glands along with calcium hormones to determine parathyroid disease.
Treatment Options for Parathyroid Disease
Surgical removal is the primary treatment for parathyroid disease. Our doctors offer minimally invasive procedures for patients with hyperparathyroidism, laparoscopic surgery to remove adrenal tumors, and thyroid surgery.
