What is a Double Balloon Endoscopy?

A double balloon endoscopy is an endoscopy procedure used to examine parts of the small intestines that cannot be viewed with an upper endoscopy or colonoscopy. A capsule endoscopy can be performed with a double balloon endoscopy.

How does a Double Balloon Endoscopy work?

The double balloon endoscopy is performed using an endoscope that not only has a light and camera on the tip but also has a balloon on the tip. Fitted around this endoscope is a tube, called an overtube, with another balloon on the tip. By alternately securing each balloon to the wall of the intestine, the balloons can be inflated to move the endoscope and then deflated to move both tubes further into the intestines.

When is a Double Balloon Endoscopy recommended?

A double balloon endoscopy is a treatment option to remove polyps or tumors and to stop bleeding. During a double balloon endoscopy, a biopsy can be taken. A double balloon endoscopy also can be performed to diagnose inflammatory bowel disease.

The Melissa L. Posner Institute for Digestive Health & Liver Disease at Mercy provides diagnosis and treatment for a range of gastroenterology issues including heartburn, liver disease, bowel conditions, motility disorders and pancreatic disease.
