What is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure in which a laparoscope (thin, tube-like instrument with a camera on the tip) is inserted into the abdominal wall and used to remove diseased tissue. This procedure can be an alternative to traditional open surgery and can result in a faster recovery time and less post-operative pain.

How is a Laparoscopy performed?

One or more small incisions will be made in your belly. A hollow needle is inserted into one of the small incisions. Gas is slowly administered through needle to inflate the belly. This allows the doctor to see the organs more clearly.

The laparoscope and surgical instruments are then placed through the incisions to view the organs and perform needed surgery. A laser may be attached to the laparoscope to help with the surgery.

When the surgery is complete, all the tools are removed and the gas is released from the abdomen. The incisions are closed with stitches and covered with a bandage.
