The Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand Center at Mercy is now offering patients Mako Shoulder, an alternative to traditional total reverse shoulder replacement.
What is Mako Shoulder?
Mako Shoulder is a surgical treatment option for people experiencing severe shoulder pain and dysfunction due to osteoarthritis and/or rotator cuff tears that are no longer repairable. It is an advanced form of a reverse total shoulder replacement, using robotic-arm assisted technology to help surgeons deliver the most personalized and accurate treatment possible.
How is Mako Shoulder performed?
The Mako Shoulder treatment is a three-step process:
1) First, you’ll get a CT scan of your shoulder, which is uploaded into the Mako system software and used to generate a 3D virtual model of the joint.
2) Based on this model, your surgeon will create a pre-operative plan tailored specifically to you.
3) Your surgeon will perform the surgery, guiding and maintaining complete control of the robotic arm while receiving auditory, visual, and tactile feedback from the system. After removing diseased and/or damaged bone and cartilage, your surgeon will place the implant into your shoulder.
