Mercy Neurologist Dr. Mark Fehr Discusses Stroke Risk Factors and Prevention
March 06, 2017
Stroke is the third-leading cause of death for women in the U.S.
Each year about 55,000 more women than men suffer a stroke. It occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off and recovery can take a long time.
Eating healthy and exercise help reduce chances of stroke. According to Mercy Medical Center neurologist Dr. Mark Fehr of The Neurology Center at Mercy, the five most common causes of stroke are:
- Age greater than 55
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
“Getting those possible risk factors, if you have them or might have them under control, which includes seeing your doctor, talking about blood pressure or quitting smoking will make a difference,” Dr. Fehr said.
Mercy Medical Center often uses the word “F.A.S.T.” to educate patients about recognizing strokes. It stands for facial drooping, arm weakness, speech problems and time.
Getting treatment quickly can make the difference in recovery.
