Hospital Names Wednesday, March 15th "Barbara Mikulski Day" at Mercy Medical Center
March 15, 2017
(Baltimore, MD) – Mercy Medical Center welcomes former U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski on Wed., March 15th to address a special luncheon in honor of Mercy’s social workers. March is National Professional Social Work Month.
According to Sr. Helen Amos, RSM, Executive Chair of Mercy’s Board of Trustees, Senator Mikulski was approached to address the luncheon given her “long-time friendship” with Mercy Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy, and “the fact that the Senator began her distinguished career as a social worker.”
“Senator Mikulski has always been a special friend of Mercy. She consistently puts the needs of her constituents first, and is an invaluable champion of Mercy Medical Center. For this reason, we have also named Wed., March 15th ‘Barbara Mikulski Day’ here at Mercy,” said Sr. Helen Amos, RSM, Executive Chair, Mercy Board of Trustees.
Thomas R. Mullen, Mercy Health Services and Mercy Medical Center President and CEO, noted that 10 years ago, Senator Mikulski secured federal funds that enabled the downtown Baltimore hospital to launch a digital mammography program in The Tyanna O'Brien Center for Women's Imaging.
“In recognition of her efforts, we unveiled a plaque in her honor that cites many of her qualities that make her such an extraordinary effective public servant. Referencing her inspired leadership, tireless advocacy, determination, and compassion - the plaque only begins to describe Barbara Mikulski,” Mr. Mullen said.
Mr. Mullen also referenced the role Senator Mikulski played when she, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, state leaders, and senior officials from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) joined at Mercy on Jan. 10, 2014 to announce efforts to update Maryland’s all-payer rate-setting system for hospital services to further improve patient health and reduce health costs.
“Senator Mikulski played an important role in developing Maryland’s original Medicare Waiver and gaining federal approval of its modernization in 2014,” Mr. Mullen said.
The Mercy Social Work Luncheon is closed to the general public.
